Note the pictures of the adults are of the actual parents -- I do not have adult blue mozambiques but apparently the blue color is recessive to the pink/red color genetically. The pics of juveniles are of about 5 week old fingerlings -- they grow fast. The pictures of frozen tilapia were taken at my local Costco -- they look exactly like mine. My breeders were shipped in from Puerto Rico where they have some large fish farms. I like the black splotches and I am curious to see if the blue ones also have the blotches when older as all pics of the blues I have seen do not. Perhaps selective breeding may create some blotched blues. Note that I have had a lot of cichlids over the years and these fish surprised me -- there were guppy and platy fry in with them and they never ate them or bothered any other species of fish. Also they do not eat their own fry or the snails seen in the pics. When they approach a large size you need to provide hiding spots for the females and subdominant males to hide. Some hobbyists use sections of 4 inch pipe. These cichlids are mouthbrooders and the female will pick up the eggs and hatch them in her mouth -- takes about 2 weeks. They need fairly warm water -- 80 F -- to breed but will live down to 56 F -- but note that they would not survive in a pond that drops below 56 F. I had the parents of these fry in a 100 gallon tub which was heavily planted with jungle/italian val planted in small gravel -- I noticed half of the plants floating and moved them to see the bottom. The male had dug up the plants to make a very large pit in the middle of the planted area for a spawning area. Some articles and videos indicate feeding issues -- I feed the adults canned cat food (pate with the grease washed off). I have ground pellet and nauplii for the fry.
