Description: On offer is an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) and uncommon 1797 copper engraved print of "Nunnery of Manuel or Emanuel", West Lothian, Scotland. The view was drawn in 1789 by Newton. and published by Hooper. Good dark image which would look great framed. This print is in good condition and is approx. 6 x 8 inches (15.5 x 20 cm) plus wide margins with a blank back. This print was published in an 1797 edition of "The Antiquities of Scotland by Francis Grose". Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin. The Nunnery of Emanuel or Manuel was situated in the south-east border of Stirlingshire, upon the north bank of the Avon, a mile above Linlithgow bridge. But the ruins now consist simply of a portion of the western gable, wrapt in a thick wood-warp of ivy. The fragment, which is of hewn stone, and elegant in its simplicity, contains an arched-door or gateway, with three small Gothic windows over it; and above these a circular one is placed. The south wall of the nunnery was standing until the beginning of 1788, when, the river having risen to an unusual height, it was swept away by the violence of the flood, with part of the bank that had been used as a cemetery. The Manuel Nunnery, as we find from reliable records, was founded by Malcolm IV., in 1156, and consecrated to the Virgin Mary.
