Description: Croats at the Seat of War. 1855 This is a single sheet only, which appeared as the front page of the Dec. 29, 1855 issue of The Illustrated London News. It was printed over 160 years ago. It measures 10.5 x 15.5 inches in size, and is in very good and attractive condition, with a dampstain at its bottom left corner (see photo), but which doesn't impact the focus point of this item. This focal point is a wood engraving titled: CROATS. FROM A PHOTOGRAPH BY MR. FENTON, IN THE CRIMEAN EXHIBITION. This illustration is 6.75x8.25 in size, and features a portrait of three stern-looking Croatians. It was engraved based on a photograph by Roger Fenton, famed as a pioneer in the history of war photography. On the reverse side of the page is a short 16-line article related to the front page group portrait. Titled, CROATS AT THE SEAT OF WAR, it says, in part: The characteristic group engraved upon the preceding page is from one of Mr. Roger Fenton's beautiful photographs in the Crimean Exhibition. One of the most striking attractions of this collection is the great variety of national character which it presents, arising from the multiplicity of people engaged in the great war. . . . Croats, it will be remembered, have been variously employed at the seat of war. Their aid in the Transport and Commissariat Service, as Balaclava, were vividly sketched by our Artist . . . In the photograph here engraved is a family in the trenches; where the superior Croat has the badge of authoritya stick. . . . Etc. More than a third of the rest of this page is devoted to news of the Crimean War. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
