Description: A magnificent proof specimen of this perennially popular rarity! The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was first prepared as a pattern in late 1856 as the proposed small-size cent in copper-nickel composition intended to replace the large cent. Later strikings were initially meant for distribution to Congressional leaders, but by 1859 Mint Director Snowden was striking 1856 Flying Eagle cents expressly for distribution to collectors. Hailing from an original mintage of an estimated 1,500 pieces struck, offered here is a lovely Choice Proof specimen that would do justice in the finest numismatic cabinet. Smoothly mirrored, the luminous surfaces display impressive, full striking detail throughout all the design elements. A base of original burnt sienna color flashes when light hits the surfaces and gives way to subtle touches of golden-orange and apricot in the fields. CAC-approved examples are of course highly sought after within this historic issue and are worthy of a strong bid. - Flying Eagle Cent
