1859 $5 Bank of St. Johns, Jacksonville Florida Obsolete -Very Scarce! Choice VF

Description: 1859 $5 Bank of St. Johns - Jacksonville, Florida Obsolete Banknote - Very Scarce! Choice VF+, Beautiful Vignettes! Excellent Colorful Note, Problem-Free and No Pinholes. A Beautiful Example, and Quite Scarce this Nice! Fully-Framed! This bank was founded in 1858 by Arthur M. Reed who had been operating an agency for the Bank of Charleston in his grocery and dry goods store since 1849. When Florida severely limited out-of-state banks and their agencies in 1858, Reed converted his agency to the Bank of St. Johns. Although he did not formally adopt free bank status, Reed did comply with the state's banking laws and deposited bonds to secure his circulation with the State Comptroller. As a result, the notes were countersigned by the Comptroller and displayed the state banking die. The $5 features a large cotton boll vignette flanked by a smaller passenger train vignette and the aforementioned state banking die. The note was given enhanced protection by the addition of a light red overall tint. While by no means the rarest Florida note you will ever find, it is always popular due to its design and extravagant use of color. The Bank Operated from 1859 until it failed at the end of the US Civil War in 1865. Please Check out Our Web Site : antebellumnumismatics. com where you can see many new purchases and other listings.
