Description: American artist Launt Thompson (1833-1894) wrote this kind message to one of his admirers on August 26, 1865. The letter reads: "Dear Sir, I found your note on my table on my return to town, after an absence of several days. It gives me pleasure to comply with your request. Very truly yours, Launt Thompson". Launt Thompson was born in Ireland and emigrated to Albany, NY during the potato famine. He worked as a "studio boy" for the neoclassical sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer. He opened his own studio in New York City in 1858 and became a National Academician in 1862. His sculptures can be found at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Yale University, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc. 6 1/4" x 4".
