Description: 1866 Shield Nickel (always With Rays), first year issue of this new coin denomination concept, authenticated / graded / encapsulated by ANACS as AU55. Besides a first-year issue, the 1866 is always a Type 1 Shield nickel, with its rays on the reverse before the Mint removed the rays from the design to try to make the strike better, starting Type 2 the next year. As the U.S. Mint struggled with coining nickel five cent coins, they were achieving commercial success, as people accepted them and found them convenient. But even though nickels - like today - were 75% copper and 25% nickel (and yet, we never called them "coppers"), that was enough nickel to damage existing Mint equipment, which had been used for softer copper, silver, and gold. So the Mint went through some dies, to be sure. This specimen offered for you here is one such example of a die crack or two on both sides - and a special feature of a weak "S" in the obverse's "Trust." It features toning that makes this Choice AU coin not so much silvery as it is toned bronze and, depending on the light, with reds and multicolours to blues. Enjoy considering!
