1887-1890 Old Judge N172 REPRINT: Harry Stovey, Philadelphia Athletics (A.A.)

Description: For the Baseball Hobbyist. . . 1887-1890 Old Judge tobacco card (N172) [#40] - Harry Stovey ~ Philadelphia Athletics (American Association) Stovey personified "Power and Speed": he held the all-time home run and stolen base records at time of his retirement. Hall of Fame voters lack historical perspective: in his only Hall of Fame consideration he garnered 7.7% on the 1936 Veterans Committee ballot. More than a dozen who finished below him were elected decades ago. Harry? He never again got consideration. REPRINT ~ Near-Mint "N172" (actually, simply "172") - the "N" (for 19th century) being added in later years - is the designation Jefferson Burdick in his American Card Catalog decades ago gave Goodwin & Company's Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cards of 1887-1890. Original cards from this set are now more than 125 years old and an individual card of the most common player will cost hundreds of dollars in top condition. This card is reproduced in close-to-the- original 1-7/16" by 2-1/2" size (being 1/1/2" by 2-1/2") and features a black and white posed photograph on thin cardboard stock. The back has a snappy little biography (frequently with reference to the Old Judge issue) below the player's name and card number and closes with mention of that fact that the card is a REPRINT. Here is an opportunity to acquire a reprint of a very scarce card at a affordable price. Condition: Near-Mint Collecting Tip: for those seeking detailed information regarding Old Judge cards - and especially N172's, we recommend (and sell) The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Co. ~ 1886-1890, the encyclopedic 459-page hardbound book. Shipping OPTIONS are available - YOUR CHOICE of either eBay standard envelope service (ESE) which is cheaper with slower delivery or USPS Ground Advantage (more costly for single cards but much faster delivery). We also offer UNLIMITED singles (up to and including 8X10 inches in size) shipped via Ground Advantage for the one card rate. Both services include insurance but USPS Ground Advantage is considerably quicker, with fewer limitations. _______________________ Important: Shipping Information A goal has always been to keep shipping costs low. Our primary objective is to sell cards and other things of interest to baseball hobbyists - not make money by overcharging on shipping. If you ever believe you are being overcharged on shipping, please email us and we will double-check the facts of the matter. Thank you! For U.S. customers (on most items) we combine multiple items purchased so you pay only the shipping charge on the heaviest item - all other items ship free of charge. (An exception would be if an item must be sent via media/book rate; also, on certain heavier items there may be an extra charge due to increased cost of shipping via Priority Mail instead of First Class.) In order to receive this combined item/one-fee service, PLEASE wait for or request a combined invoice. Otherwise fees accrue which we cannot eliminate. We will ship worldwide: Before buying citizens of all other countries, please email us first for the exact cost. We pack your order carefully - sandwiching cards between cardboard and utilizing boxes, bubble wrap, etc., as necessary - to ensure your items arrive in the condition you expect. Items are shipped the next business day. We ship 5 - usually 6 - days each week. Payment should be made within 7 days after initial purchase on invoice. p1960/pop/pcl ~ Please visit The Baseball Hobbyist eBay Store ~ Powered by eBay Turbo Lister The free listing tool.
