Description: 1930 Large Bronze Medal The Society Of Medalists 2nd Issue By Paul Manship Hail to Dionysus For Your Medal Collection-MED491 Details Description: A nice large and heavy bronze medal from 1930. This is the Society of Medalists second issue medal. The obverse of the medal has the image of Dionysus the Greek god of wine. He is crowned with grapes and has an impressive beard. The image is within a circle of dots emanating from a shallow two handled kylix. The image is surrounded by a legend in two lines which says "HAIL*TO*DIONYSUS*WHO*FIRST*DISCOVERED*THE*MAGIC*OF*THE*GRAPE*". The reverse shows two youthful satyrs trampling grapes in some sort or a large bowl. There are grapes and a vine above them. There is the copy right (c) in the bottom of the bowl with the name .P.MANSHIP 1930 below the bowl. The edge of the medal is marked "The Society of Medalists Second Issue-Medallic Art Company N.Y." The medal also has the notation 1963.28.2 in red paint along the edge, which is obviously a museum accession number, making this medal a deaccession from a museum. A great looking and very interesting medal to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: 1930. Origin: New York, USA. The medal has no wear with minimum surface marks or scratches. It has what I view as beautiful brown coloring with brassy or golden highlights at the high points.
