NOTE: Make certain when buying vents online, that each vent has a retention ring (lip) around the base of the vent! If the lower part of the vent is smooth, the vent you have is designed for "metal" cans and may not stay in place in a plastic can. See the pictures above or below for the detailed image of the lip! Why install a vent in your plastic container? There are two reasons to install a vent in your containers! The first and most important is when you are pouring a larger quantity of fuel (2.5 gallons plus) you will note that it seems to take forever to fill the tank you are pouring into. While pouring, you notice the can is sucking for air (Glug, Glug, Glug) and giving more air allows the fuel to move faster and smoother. The second reason is really dependent on your upper body strength, if you are strong enough to hold your can in in the air, balance and pour, while waiting for fuel to fill the tank, then you probably don't need venting. If you are like the rest of us, then you need to add vents. Smaller cans (1 gallon or so) usually don't need vents, as you are probably only pouring into smaller tanks and the weight of the fuel is minor. What cans does it fit? Our vents will fit into any plastic fuel or water container. Just make sure you install it above the "fill" line to avoid future issues and follow the below installation instructions or the instructions on the back of your packing slip, when your order arrives. You can install the vents in any plastic fuel/water can/jugs. Please note that it is recommended that your can be empty, clean and dry before vent installation. The steps below, with pictures, will assist you in venting your fuel/water container. Step 1: Clean the area where you will be installing the new vent. We suggest using a solvent cleaner to remove any grease, dirt or debris that might fall into your container. NOTE: Make sure you select a spot that is relatively flat and above the "fill" line and opposite of the spout. It is not recommended to install a vent in the handle of the container. Try not to over fill your containers with vents installed. Step 2: Verify that the area is clean (like the picture below) and dry before proceeding. Step 3: Pre-drill a small pilot hole in the can top (your selected location) using a 1/16" to 1/8" drill bit. We have found that a standard HSS Bit (High Speed Steel) works best and you will see why in the next set of pictures. You will note (in the picture above) that most of the debris (plastic) travels up the drill bit, leaving small pieces to carefully remove after pre-drilling. We recommend using a piece of tape to remove the small pieces of plastic (as shown above) so you won't push them back in the hole you just drilled. Step 4: After cleaning away the debris from the pre-drill, you will drill the final hole with a 1/2" (31/64") drill bit. We recommend starting with a 31/64" bit first to provide the best (tight) fit, but if the plastic container has thick walls (each manufacturer is different) you will have to drill again with a 1/2" bit. If the walls of the container are approaching 1/4", you will damage the "lip" during installation, if drilled with a 31/64" bit, so you will have to drill again with a 1/2" bit, then install the vent. Thinner walled containers, the lip will slide in tight. Diesel cans are typically made with thicker walls. The larger drill bit (31/64" or 1/2") we suggest is a HSS as shown below, as the debris (plastic) will flow up the "flute" of the bit. You will notice, while drilling, that the initial plastic debris will lay off to the side of the bit, but then will travel up the "flute" of the bit while continuing to drill the hole. It's important to drill straight and even into the container, so you don't create an "oval" opening, thus allowing a tighter fit. Don't fret over this, as the "lip" seals nicely, even with a bit of wobble. Notice the amount of plastic debris that travel up the bit. We usually pick up (carefully) the larger pieces, then use tape to gather the smaller pieces, to keep them out of the can. The amount of debris will vary, depending on the thickness of your container walls. Note: It is important to drill straight into the plastic container to allow a nice tight fit for the vent. As mentioned previously, use tape (any kind) to remove all remaining plastic debris and keep it out of your container. You won't like the results (plastic pieces in your fuel) when your device quits working from debris clogging the fuel line. Be careful and clean!!! Now you should have a clean and accurate hole to allow you to proceed to the next step. Step 5: Next is to place the vent into the hole until it rests on the "lip" as shown in the next picture. Step 6: Now you have your 31/64" or 1/2" hole, all you have to do to install the vent in by tapping the vent with a rubber mallet (one good whack should do the trick), or if you're "strong like bull", snap that puppy in with the palm of your hand, push firmly to fully seat. If you don't have a rubber mallet, then place a small piece of wood over the vent opening to prevent damage by using a hammer. The next picture shows what it should look like when the vent is fully seated and ready to be used! IMPORTANT: Make sure you inspect the inside of your fuel can before filling with fuel, to make sure no plastic or other debris has fallen inside. START VENTING AND ENJOY!!! How to replace an existing vent! Your container may have come with an existing vent or you installed one previously and find that it has broken, cracked or you are missing the cap to the vent. If this is the case, you will want to replace that vent, so it is fully functional for you. Follow the next steps to accomplish this. Step 1: As mentioned at the beginning of the installation steps, make certain your container is empty, clean and dry before proceeding. Then, using a razor blade or knife, cut off the existing vent as shown in the picture below. Be careful not cut yourself or damage the container too much. Step 2: Once you have the top portion of the vent cut off, you will notice the bottom portion still in place and now need to remove it. We find that simply pushing the bottom portion through the container with a screw drive or punch works well. The bottom portion will fall inside of your container and that is why it's important to have the container empty and dry, so when you tip the can upside down to remove that piece, you are not creating a hazard or a mess. Step 3: Now you have a hole in the top of your container and you want to make certain that hole is the correct size to accept your new vent. Inspect the hole, make sure it's relatively round, clean and no excess debris around it. Measure the hole with calipers or even a tape measure to confirm the size. If the size is too large, we have found that a small bead of silicone around the hole before inserting the new vent, works well in keeping the new vent in place and working properly. If the hole is too small, then obviously you will have to re-drill it to the correct size (go to Step 4 above "Installation") and proceed. If the hole is clean and the correct size (31/64" or 1/2" depending on wall thickness) then proceed to Step 5 above for Installation. Enjoy your new vent and remember where you got them from, because you might need more in the future or your friends and neighbors will need them.
