Description: In 2001, Australia released a series of coins to commemorate the Centenary of Federation (100 years since the separate states federated and formed the Commonwealth of Australia). There were ten different designs for fifty cent coins which marked the occasion - a common "Australia" design plus one each for the six states (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia), the two territories (Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory) and for Norfolk Island. reverse design features the Australian 1912 Commonwealth Coat of Arms granted by King George V. This Coat of Arms consists of a shield depicting the badges of the six Australian States. Aside the shield are a Red Kangaroo and Emu. These animals symbolize a nation moving forward. Above the shield is a seven pointed star on a wreath, each point representing the 6 States and one for the Territories. Below are sprays of Golden Wattle and the name AUSTRALIA in a scroll.
