The 65th Bomb Squadron was reactivated by Strategic Air Command in the late 1940s, and was equipped with B-29 Superfortresses. It was one of the first operational B-29 squadrons of SAC, but it was not fully manned or equipped until 1948. The squadron trained for strategic bombardment missions and was upgraded to the new B-50 Superfortress, which was capable of carrying atomic bombs, in 1948. In 1954, the 65th Bombardment Squadron replaced its propeller-driven B-50s with new B-47E Stratojet medium bombers, which were designed for high subsonic speeds and primarily intended for penetrating Soviet airspace. However, by the late 1950s, the B-47 was seen as becoming obsolete and was being phased out of SAC's strategic arsenal. The 65th Bombardment Squadron began sending its aircraft to other B-47 wings as replacements in late 1959. In early 1960, the squadron moved to Carswell AFB in Texas in preparation for receiving the new B-58 Hustler supersonic medium bomber, and sent the last of its B-47s to AMARC in early 1960. The 65th Bombardment Squadron received its first B-58s in March 1960 and continued to receive new aircraft throughout the year. It trained and became proficient with the new bomber, reaching Operational Ready status in 1962. The squadron trained and participated in numerous SAC exercises and deployments throughout the 1960s. However, in December 1965, the phaseout of the B-58 Hustler fleet was ordered by Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara due to concerns that the high-altitude performance of the B-58 could no longer ensure success against increasingly sophisticated Soviet air defenses. The 65th Bombardment Squadron began sending its aircraft to AMARC in November 1969, and the squadron was inactivated in January 1970.
