Description: I live in South Florida and grow my Epidendrums mostly outside, either in pots, in the ground or attached to trees. The ones I have inside are in a sunny window, but they bloom much better outside. Epidendrums are very fast growers and need sufficient hydration to build new growth. However, they always survive outside during the dry winter months and are ready to bloom like crazy when it starts raining in the Spring. Light- Epidendrums require a lot of light all year. I have placed them in multiple spots in my garden and have found that they will bloom for me in everything from filtered light to full sun. You will know that your orchid is receiving the ideal amount of sunlight when the foliage is grassy green with a slight tinge of red. If it is getting too much light, the leaves will turn a dark reddish/brown color. If you do not give it enough light, the orchid will become leggy and won't bloom. Temperature- Epidendrums can adapt to a wide range of temperatures. Nighttime temperatures can range between 55 to 70°F and daytime temperatures 80 to 90°F. Plants can tolerate temperatures of up to 100°F if they are not in full sun and have enough water and air flow. We've had some cold (for us) winters and my Epidemdrums have tolerated temperatures into the low 40's for short periods of time. Humidity- The ideal humidity range to grow Epidendrums is above 50%-60% humidity. If they are inside, they will need adequate air movement. This could be an open window or an oscillating fan that would mimic the breeze that the orchid would receive in nature. Soil and Potting- Use a medium that allows for good drainage. They can handle low nutrient locations. They also grow very well attached to trees. I have attached them to a variety of trees from palms to moringas to a rainbow eucalyptus and they are all thriving!
