Description: I PURCHASED THESE TWO BOOKMARKS AND SMALL PAINTING AT THE "ANI PAPYRUS SHOP" IN LUXOR IN 1997. IT WAS THE CHRISTMAS AFTER THE ASSISANATION OF THE GERMAN TOURISTS AT ONE OF THE TEMPLES. THE LOCAL MERCHANTS AND PEOPLE WERE SO HAPPY TO SEE THE FEW OF US WHO CAME TO VISIT THAT FIRST CHRISTMAS. THE QUALITY OF WORK DONE BY THE ARTISANS AT ANI PAPYRUS IN CAIRO, LUXOR, AND ASWAN IS CONSIDERED TO BE SUPERLATIVE. THE BOOKMARKS, 2" X 7.75", ARE ACTUALLY STANPED WORK USING SEVEN DIFFERENT COLOR PLATES. THE PICTURE OF THE SEATED GOD, 4" X 6", IS HAND PAINTED BY A RESIDENT ARTISAN AND IS SIGNED. THE PAPYRUS IS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY AND THE COLORS ARE AS BRIGHT AND CRISP AS THE DAY I BOUGHT THEM. The papyrus plant is a reed that grows in marshy areas around the Nile river. In ancient Egypt, the wild plant was used for a variety of uses, and specially cultivated papyrus, grown on plantations, was used to make the writing material. The inside of the triangular stalk was cut or peeled into long strips. These strips were then laid out in two layers, one horizontal and one vertical, and pressed and dried to form a papyrus sheet.
