Description: Please email with any questions. Handwritten letter dated March 17, 1872, written by A J Johnson of Kosciusko, MS to his cousin who he has never met. Letter reads: I this evening take the pleasure of writing you a few lines in answer to your request in a letter to father bearing date of February the 19th. I was glad to know that you had not forgotten us although we never have seen each other I will say to you that this leaves me & family well and the rest of the connection so far as I know. I was at fathers on last Sunday and him and family was well at that time. I am living fourteen miles from him now and do not see them often. I was living in one mile of him but I sold my place and am living on a place that belongs to my wife in Atalla County. I have been married nearly five years and have been farming all the time and have made a handsome living and some money besides. I sold my place for 11 1/4 dollars per acre in gold all cash and have got better land where I now live than I sold. You said in your letter that you had two of the prettiest children you ever saw. I do not doubt you think so but please admit (?) me to run the joke a little. They surely do not take it after you for I never saw a man by the name of Johnson yet that was good looking. I will now tell you about mine. I have two. The eldest a girl three years old, the youngest a boy 18 months old and I am like you are by yours but will agree that the beauty is on the other side. I would be glad to see you come up in this country. Father told me to tell you to come to see him. He is getting to look very old and has nearly lost his eye sight by sore eyes three years. He was stone blind for a long time. I will now close for the present as I have not wrote any in some time and my hand is cramped very much. I remain as ever your cousin until death. Write soon. Below the letter closure someone has been doing some figuring in pencil about acreage. Unfortunately the paper has been folded and unfolded so many times, it has split in two.
