Description: The Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, presents an Antique Austrian “Cold Painted” Spelter Table Lamp crafted in Vienna. Tested and works. Circa: 1900. A popular technique at the turn of the 19th century, cold painting involved covering a sculpture with several layers of unfired polychrome “dust paint” on a sculpture was never fired — hence the piece was “cold painted”. The lamp’s lively narrative consists of 2 merchants, one riding a camel, the other standing, wearing long tunics and head turbans, conducting business beneath an oriental rug. The lamp was likely cast at the Bergmann foundry in Vienna. The elder Bergmann, from Bohemia, moved to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son, Franz Xavier Bergmann (1861–1936), continued the business and opened a second Vienna foundry in 1900. The Bergmanns perfected the cold painted method for bronze and shelter sculptures; these were exported from Austria to London, Paris, and New York, and sold as collectables.
