Description: Authentic Chinese soapstone chop seal. Chop seals were used to stamp letters and official documents in lieu of handwritten signatures by government officials, nobles and well-to-do families for decades in imperial China. While the practice originated in China, other easter Asian countries grew to adopt seal chops as well over time. They were often carved in the shape of a mythological creature. This particular chop seems to depict a luan, a bird in Chinese mythology that indicates times of peace. It is made of soapstone, but other chop seals were commonly made from bamboo, bone, woods, metals, and granite. Vintage/Antique Items: Please note that most vintage/antique items may have minor where due to their age and being loved, which we believe only adds to the charm and patina of these pieces. Because the items sold in our shop are vintage or antique, there are often small condition issues, which we do our best to accurately disclose and photograph in the listings. While we try very hard to describe our items accurately, it is possible that the eyes of a true collector might see something that we do not. If you are particular about your vintage items, please ask questions before you buy we really want you to be happy with your item and have confidence in your purchase.
