Description: Beautiful! Very early Hudson River School landscape featuring a mill pond and a man canoeing to his home. Dynamically composed, the contrast of light areas to the Northeast casting shadows behind the trees and the right hand side of the home is extraordinary. The confident handling of the paint along the shoreline with the rocks and sand and also of the water cascading over the edge of the dam reflects an accomplished hand. Touchingly, on the right hand side, you can see the homeowner's laundry drying on a line. This is quite typical of this artist's paintings depicting normal American life. Early hints of what's to come with George Caleb Bingham and other painters can clearly be seen, particularly in the way the man in the canoe is composed. He often used figures, including the ones way in the distance to give a sense of scale to the landscape. William Wall was based in New York. However, he did exhibit in Pennsylvania, so it is possible this painting depicts a scene from either New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania. While he mainly did watercolors, he did several well-known oil paintings, one of which hangs in the Honolulu museum and others scattered around the tri-state area in different museums. He is considered one of the forerunners of the Hudson River School and was a contemporary of Thomas Cole and Thomas Doughty.
