This photo depicts the German cruiser Karlsruhe docked in Portland, Oregon, in June 1932. The cruiser is a large naval ship, evident with its substantial structure and masts, docked alongside industrial buildings with large painted signs visible in the background. A bridge is also visible in the distance on the right side of the image. The Karlsruhe was a light cruiser of the German navy, used primarily during the interwar period. It was part of the Reichsmarine and later the Kriegsmarine. The visit of a German naval vessel to Portland in 1932 might have been part of a goodwill or diplomatic mission, reflecting the international relations of the time leading up to World War II.The text on the photo reads "GERMAN CRUISER KARLSRUHE". Visible signage on the buildings in the background includes "AMERICAN SCREW CO.", "WARREN COMPANY", and "STANDARD OIL PRODUCTS". No notable persons or further text is identified in the photo.
