Description: Berlin, NH was once a center for the timbering, wood pulp, and papermaking industries in Northern New England where the Berlin Mills Company was, at the turn of the 20th century, the largest employer in the area. In 1885, Gerrish & Co., a general merchant in town moved into a new building, indicating their growth and establishment within the community—which was rapidly developing due to its location on the Androscoggin River. In 1901 Gerrish & Co. changed their name to The Gerrish Company as seen on the building sign on the right side of the street in this postcard. The company was involved in general merchandising, which likely included a variety of goods and services typical of general stores during that era. On the right side of street near the very edge of the postcard is a sign that says “Osteopath” although I can't make out the name above that word. Berlin, NH today is a sleepy little town compared to its heydays in the turn of the 20th century. It's a lovely place to visit and explore. The Hugh C.
