Description: Im not an expert in Chinese antiques, but this piece is without a doubt an entirely hand carved Red Cinnabar lacquer box with a depiction of Two scholars surrounded in nature and intricately carved foliage. This was likely an early antique Chinoiserie export most likely dating around the turn of the century. The open lidded box has a metal base with paste, paper, and then thick red cinnabar lacquer was built up layer after layer so it could be subsequently hand carved. The layers of lacquer were made visible as the relief carving is etched down to create the relief carving on the top lid. Black Lacquer bottom & interior. Measures4.4" Wide3.7" High1.7" Tall Due to the pieces delicate antique nature and construction, some of the interior lip and 2 corners of the lid have visible damage. The top was professionally cleaned to restore the fine detail removing years of built up dust, dirt and grime. There is one crack in the tree trunk, but otherwise the upper carved relief is in excellent shape.
