Circa 1890 American Impressionist Landscape Painting. Hudson Valley New York

Description: For sale is quite a wonderful late 19th century oil painting featuring a wooded landscape done in the American impressionist style. Perhaps circa 1890 - 1910 in age. The painting comes from a private estate in upstate New York in the upper Hudson Valley region. It features a very atmospheric wooded landscape with a tall central oak tree dominating the viewers attention. The colorations of oranges, reds, yellows, browns and burnt umbers suggest autumn is in full swing in upstate New York. A wonderful blue sky with yellow rays of sunshine scattering just over the tall tree is casting a warm glow to the landscape below. The painting is done with exceptional fine brushwork with very impressionist wispy strokes of thick impasto paint. You can stare at the surface of this painting for a long time taking in the fine brushwork and colorations that abound the entire canvas. The painting is unsigned as far as we can see. But it is no doubt by the hand of a very well schooled American impressionist painter. Many of the established later 19th century Hudson River school artists started turning to American impressionist styles as their Hudson River school style of paintings became unpopular, and unfortunately unsellable, with the introduction of the wildly popular French impressionist paintings that began to dominate the tastes of the art world collectors and admirers. Condition: The painting can use a professional cleaning. There is some scattered chip losses. The painting also with age appropriate craquelure concentrated mostly to the blue sky area. Easily remedied by a restorer. The frame is a much later addition to the painting and a while it has done a good job of protecting the painting, we believe it is not an appropriate match for the painting and should be replaced with a wide panel gold gilded impressionist plein air picture frame or a nice arts and crafts hand carved picture frame of the period The painting would then be the focal on the wall in any collection.
