Description: Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. & Kermit Roosevelt, East of the Sun and West of the Moon (First Edition)Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1926. First Edition. A nice copy of the First Edition (copyright and publication dates both 1926) in the original dark blue binding (a later edition was published with a tan binding and without a price on the dust jacket). Frontis portrait of the Roosevelt brothers, Theodore, Jr., and Kermit, with their Shikaries protected by tissue. From the blurb on the front flap of the dust jacket: "This great adventure was officially called 'The James Simpson-Roosevelts-Field Museum Expedition.' They were in the heart of the Himalayas, sometimes 17,000 feet high, and one of the great objects of the trip was to secure good heads of Ovis Poli, the famous Marco Polo sheep. . . . The whole text is written with the well-known Roosevelt touch of adventure and scientific enthusiasm." Very Good hardcover bound in original dark blue cloth over boards. The only defect consists of spots of loss to the shiny finish of the cloth on the front and rear covers. The gilt horned Marco Polo ram's head device on the front cover and title on the spine remain bright. Corners square with a spot worn through to the board on the bottom front corner. The dust jacket has been lost but the unclipped ($3.50) front and rear flaps are laid in. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked although the paper is slightly tanned from age. Deckled edges (rough cut). Twenty-six glossy plates with photographs from the expedition, plus two maps of the Roosevelt brothers' journey. A previous bookseller has penciled in a price at the top corner of the front free end paper and there are initials in pencil at the top corner of the rear free end paper. There is a small bookseller's label on the inside front cover for McClelland & Co., Booksellers, Columbus, O. This copy came from an auction of books owned by a CIA officer posted to Tokyo after WWII. Some of the books include her research notes from the content; this book includes her typed notes of tribes and people groups of the region on a laid-in half sheet of paper headed "Population of Tekkes Valley."
