New York, NY: Del Rey, 1976. 1st hardcover edition. A Book Club Edition, which preceded the trade hardcover edition. The true 1st edition was a PBO (paperback original), which was followed by this book club edition of STAR WARS. With no mention of edition or printing noted on the copyright page, and with gutter code S27 on page 183, both which indicate that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing of this book. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: there were some later book club editions of STAR WARS that were published in this hardcover format and there was a trade hardcover edition of STAR WARS, but the trade hardcover edition was published after the book club edition. This is the real deal: the true 1st hardcover edition of STAR WARS. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. George Lucas was born in 1944 in Modesta, California. His family attended Disneyland during its opening week in July of 1955 and Lucas would remain enthusiastic about the park. He was interested in comics and science fiction, including television programs such as the “Flash Gordon” serials. Long before Lucas began making films, he wanted to be a race car drive. He spent a good deal of time during his high school years racing on some underground racing circuits at fairgrounds and hanging around garages. A few days before his high school graduation, Lucas was racing his souped-up Autobianchi Bianchina when another driver broadsided him, which flipped his car several times. His seatbelt broke, ejecting him from the car, and accidentally saved his life. He required emergency medical treatment and that experience caused him to lose interest in racing. The accident also convinced him to pursue other interests. Lucas attended Modesto Junior College, where he studied anthropology, sociology, and literature. He also began filming with an 8 mm camera, including filming car races. He also became more and more interested in making his own films. Lucas transferred to the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Some of his classmates were Walter Murch, Hal Harwood, John Milieus, and Mathew Robbins, and became a clique of film students known as “The Dirty Dozen.” He also became friends with fellow acclaimed student filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Lucas graduate with a BFA in film in 1967. He tried to join the United States Air Force, but was turned down because of his numerous speeding tickets. He was later drafted by the United States Army, but was exempted after medical tests showed that he had diabetes. Lucas continued with his film studies and continued to make various short films. Lucas directed the short film “Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB,” which won first prize at the 1967068 National Student Film Festival. He was awarded a student scholarship by Warner Brothers to observe and work on the making of a film of his choosing. He chose “Finian’s Rainbow” (1968), which was being directed by Francis Ford Coppola. In 1969 Lucas moved to San Francisco and co-founded the studio American Zoetrope with Coppola, hoping to create a liberating environment for filmmakers to direct outside the perceived oppressive control of the Hollywood studio system. Coppola filmed a longer version of “Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB,” but the film was not an immediate success (although it later became a cult classic). Lucas then created his own company, LucasFilm, Ltd., and directed the highly successful “American Graffiti” (1973). Lucas then set his sights on adapting “Flash Gordon,” but was unable to obtain the rights. He then set out to write an original space adventure that would eventually become the legendary “Star Wars” and which would lead to the amazingly successful “Star Wars” universe of films, books, games, comic books, toys, and pinball machines. “Star Wars” became the highest grossing film of all time to that point, displaced five years later by Spielberg’s “E.T.: the ExtraTerrestrial.” Lucas also acted as a story writers and executive producer on the first four “Indiana Jones” films, which Spielberg directed, and which, of course, became one of the most successful film franchises of all time. Lucas also founded Industrial Light & Magic, the hugely successful and important special effects company. The novelization of the original “Star Wars” film is offered here in its book club edition, which is the first hardcover edition. Clearly George Lucas was (and remains) one of the best, most important, and most famous film directors, screenplay writers, and producers in the history of film making. From the dust jacket: Now a spectacular motion picture from 20th Century-Fox STAR WARS from the Adventures of Luke Skywalker GEORGE LUCAS Bold, imaginative and packed with ex- citement, STAR WARS is destined to become a classic in the genre. This is the novel that brings that “sense of wonder” back to science fiction — each page brimming with heroic adventure, unexpected marvels and amazing characters like . . . Luke Skywalker, a young farm boy on the remote, sun-baked world of Ta- tooine, who is compelled to break from the dull chores on his uncle’s rance. When he intercepts a cryptic message from a kidnapped princess, Luke embarks on the most dangerous mission of his life, enlisting aid from . . . Ben Kenobi, a shabby old desert rat who, before the rise of the sinister Galactic Empire, was one of the great- est warriors of the old Republic. It is Ben who give Luke a legendary laser saber and interprets the secret code words of . . . Princess Leia Organa, the very young Senator from the rebel planet Alder- aan. The strong-willed, beautiful wom- an now has the necessary information to destroy the Empire, but has fallen into the hands of the galaxy’s most evil genius . . . Darth Vader, an awesome malevolent figure who commands the Death Star, a planet-sized space fortress that can destroy an entire solar system in mere hours. Vader plans to annihilate the secret rebel outpost after torturing its location out of the Princess. But . . . Chewbacca the Pirate and his human companion Han Solo have other ideas. Along with Luke, Ben and a pair of devoted robots, they plan a near suicidal assault on the Death Star too rescue Leia and free the universe from tyranny and oppression What follows is perhaps the most thrilling and suspenseful science fiction adventure story in recent years . . . a book that imaginative readers will find impossible to put down. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE book in an outwardly VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its light gray boards binding with blue-violet lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct 1st issue gutter code S27 on page 183. The book is not spine-leaned; also, unusual thus in that copies of this book sometimes show up with a spine lean. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped because there was no price on the flap of the dust jacket because this is a book club edition. The words “BOOK CLUB EDITION” are printed at the lower edge of the front flap of the dust jacket. The dust jacket has undergone a small amount of restoration, mainly at the upper and lower edges of the spine panel of the dust jacket. There is a touch of wear at the upper and lower edges of the spine panel of the dust jacket; largely unobtrusive. A note on the photos in this listing: the photos of the dust jacket were taken while the dust jacket was encased in a protective Brodart dust jacket protector. Any apparent "smudges" or darkening or discolorations or glare is due to the reflections from the dust jacket protector. I decided not to remove the dust jacket from the dust jacket protector when I took the photos. I can provide photos of the dust jacket without the dust jacket protector on the dust jacket, if necessary. The great and famous and iconic dust jacket artwork depicting Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Lea is by the artist John Berkey. There are a number of photographs from the film that are dispersed throughout the book. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF “STAR WARS” 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF GEORGE LUCAS 1st EDITIONS! ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles.
