Description: Peace Dale is a village in the town of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Together with the village of Wakefield, it is treated by the U.S. Census as a component of the census-designated place identified as Wakefield-Peacedale. Peace Dale was founded around 1800 by South Kingstown industrialist Rowland Hazard who named the village in honor of his wife. Hazard reputedly pioneered the use of carding machines to process wool in Rhode Island. In 1814, Hazard was also one of the first American manufacturers to employ narrow-width power looms, and was the first woolen manufacturer to combine all his manufacturing processes under one roof, from wool carding through spinning, weaving, and dyeing. In 1819 Rowland Hazard’s sons assumed management for the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company. Peace Dales mills operated for woolen manufacturing until 1948. The Peace Dale Historic District was listed on the National Register as a historic district in 1987. One of the Historic Buildings in Peace Dale is the Peace Dale Congregation Church. The Church began as a Sunday School based in the home of Rowland and Margaret Rowland. Later, ten original members initially met for services in the home of Rowland Hazard II and then at Peace Dale Hall. The church formally became a Church of Christ in 1857 when a creed and covenant were assented to. The church was fully established in 1858 with the appointment of Rowland Hazard and Joseph Williams as Deacons. In 1870 the cornerstone of a new church building was laid, and the Gothic Church building was completed in 1872.
