It is oil on canvas and gallery framed. The painting is signed lower left by the artist. There is a paper label on the reverse which states "Anne Johann (Re-birth, A New Day)" Condition: Excellent Measurements: Frame - 37 1/8" x 29 1/4" Canvas - 36" x 28" Bio: From her Website Water is an amazing element. It can reflect its surroundings, be clear, translucent, or murky. It can be still, or choppy with rushing waves. Water is soft, but can erode the hard substance of rock. These qualities fascinate artist Anne Johann and led her to include water in almost every painting she creates. The place where land and water meet is the most intriguing to her. Johann’s childhood was spent in New York's Hudson Valley, and after a short time on the East End of Long Island, she returned and resides there today. It is a beautiful area with fjords marking the Gateway to the Highlands of the Hudson River, and miles of reservoirs creating exquisite vistas of tranquility. Vacations to Maine at an early age left a lasting love of the Maine seashore, and the area is still a muse for this artist. In such surroundings, it was natural for Johann to focus on landscape! However, as a student of art, this wasn’t the case. While studying at Pratt Institute (BFA with highest honors) and subsequently at the National Academy School of Fine Art (oil painting with renowned portrait artist Ronald Sherr) she concentrated on painting the figure. A workshop in portraiture with Daniel Greene (another renowned portrait artist) furthered the emphasis on figurative work. What Johann learned from Sherr and Greene was traditional technique. She then applied this to her love of landscape, communicating the awe and reverence she feels while in nature. The buttery consistency of oil paint is what Johann loves about the medium. She also works in watercolor which has influenced her use of color. Watercolor also changed the way that she approaches oils: she will allow areas of the toned canvas or board to show through, or paint transparent layers so that the light will bounce through in a similar fashion to watercolor. The paintings have received numerous awards and grants, and they have been exhibited in venues such as The National Arts Club, NYC; The Salmagundi Club, NYC; Lyme Art Association Gallery, Old Lyme, CT; Silvermine Guild Gallery, New Canaan, CT; Attleboro Arts Museum, Attleboro, MA; Bristol Art Museum, Bristol, RI; Sherry French Gallery, NYC. Her work has been awarded at exhibitions of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club, Silvermine Guild Gallery (Art of the Northeast USA exhibition), The Hudson Valley Art Association, and the National Association of Women Artists. Juried memberships include the Salmagundi Club and the New Haven Paint & Clay Club. Anne Johann’s biography is listed in the Marquis’ Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in America.
