Description: Land and Sea. Having just listed more 500 year old fishing lures than anyone else on Ebay. I thought I would mix it up with a few land based artifacts. Next to the knife, the adze was the most important utilitarian tool available to the ancient Alaskan hunter. This handle is special, elaborately decorated pieces (I count 40+ bow drilled holes) like this general date to the earliest period of habitation on the Bering Sea. When walrus populations numbered in the 10s of millions and the Stellar Sea Cow roamed the coast, early hunters had the "luxury" of time to embellish their prized tools. Given the care and craftsmanship in its design this handle may have been part of a ceremonial piece owned by a shaman or chief.
