Lee Chubb (b. 1904 d. 2003) American Regional Modernist o/c shop Studio TORNO

Description: Wonderful Modernist composition by renowned Saint Louis Modernist Lee Chubb. Currently 40 Auction records, some from Toomey Treadway in Chicago. Lee Chubb's compositions are brilliant, fresh and lively with a sense of humor. Some though not all rely on color as does this example. Educated Mid Century Modernist working from the 1940's and 50's onward with strong influences of Music, Architecture, Ethnographic studies, Biology, and Nature. "As Found", "As Is" abstract modern Oil on Canvas. Overall and major areas of craquelure due to thick impasto paint and age of painting. Some hard to see smaller areas where paint has chipped off or flaked off through the years at craquelure. Not signed on front. Cardboard affixed to back. Will remove cardboard if requested to see if signed by artist. Purchased from artist's estate. Varnish yellowing from age and display. Could benefit from a professional cleaning and restoration or enjoy "As Is". Personally I would not clean this painting, up to Buyer/next Owner. Some areas where paint is so thin as to reveal bare canvas, see all photos with magnifier feature to view condition. Believe this is as Artist Lee Chubb intended. One of my all time favorite Modernist paintings. Ask all questions before placing a bid. Artist Lee Chubb was a Member of The Saint Louis Artist's Guild and Modernist Art Associations. She celebrated Music and Art at the highest levels, traveling and working wherever she went, including Art Communities in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Her husband was powerbroker Attorney R. Walston Chubb, son of Ethical Society Leader Percival Chubb. Lee and R. Walston were instrumental in dedicating hundreds of acres of land along the Meramec River in Saint Louis County to form the Chubb Trail, some of the finest equestrian and mountain biking trails in Missouri. In my opinion, this is one of the 2 finest Oil Paintings I've seen by Lee Chubb. Plan to remove the cardboardbacking in a few days to see if signed on reverse. Killer example of American Modernism. Belongs in a Museum Collection. See all photos and ask all questions before placing a bid. Unsigned early Modern Masterpiece by Lee Chubb. "As Is" vintage "As Found" condition. Purchased from the Chubb Estate. Would look like a million bucks in a heavy carved gilt museum frame. Signature confirmation required for delivery. Delivery only to Paypal confirmed address. No returns. Free shipping with Buy It Now. Here to Sell! Thank You for shopping Studio TORNO Ebay Store. All the Best in Twenty Eighteen Louise "Lee" Langenohl Chubb was born in Saint Louis in 1904. Her father was August Langenohl, a percussionist with the Saint Louis Symphony. Chubb became a jazz enthusiast as the genre was being born in the Mississippi River city of Saint Louis, Missouri. Some of her most popular compositions are of jazz ensembles.Chubb received a Bachelor's degree in General Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1928. She then commenced a 20-plus year career teaching history and biology in Saint Louis public schools. In 1941 she began designing and creating candles. Their popularity resulted in a successful commercial endeavor. Jaccard's and the Minna Elman Gallery in Saint Louis and America House in New York contracted with Chubb for many years. In the late 1940s Chubb was being courted by Saint Louis businessman John Byrne when he died suddenly in a plane crash. Subsequently she dated and was to marry Washington University psychiatry professor Dr. E. Van Norman Emery. In March of 1953, he too died suddenly. Chubb, given pause, packed her textbooks and went to Elsah, Illinois on the Mississippi River for the summer. According to a friend, she had resolved to become an outstanding biology teacher. At a concert that summer Chubb met St. Louis attorney R. Walston Chubb. They married in December 1953. Chubb retired from teaching and established her candle-making shop in the basement of her new home. Enthralled with natural light and shadows, for years she continued to design candles. Chubb traveled extensively with her husband in the 1950s. They journeyed to Mexico, Guatemala, Greece, Paris, London, Israel, Africa, Manhattan, and Arizona. Mayan Indian artists influenced many of her compositions, as did Greek Orthodox architecture. The two were also avid outdoors people. They owned a canoe and enjoyed float trips on Missouri rivers. Summers were spent at their cabin in the woods overlooking Lake Michigan. The second floor bedroom of Chubb's home became a sunny studio, soon filled with her oils, canvases, pens, gum erasers, frames, easel, rollers, a jigsaw, egg cartons, piles of art magazines and Architectural Digest, and card and camping tables splattered with paint and glue. In 1957 Chubb's husband wrote to his sister: You are exceptional in recognizing the wisdom of some regular occupation, however ungainful it may be. Lee was jealous, but as a matter of fact she has joined in an informal class for dabblers under a very eminent painter at the [Saint Louis Art] Museum. She dabbles quite a bit on her own, and the house is made lively and interesting by her efforts. She belongs to the "imaginative representational neo-modern school." In addition to traveling, Chubb and her husband were active on behalf of civil rights issues. Lee Chubb's Father-In-Law, R. Walston Chubb's Father, was Saint Louis Ethical Society Leader and Member Percival Chubb (b. 1860- d.1960). "As Found", "As Is" abstract modernst mixed media composition, signed "Lee Chubb". Mixed media colored paper cut outs, some paint applied, apparently laid down under a clear layer of adhesive. Some yellowing due to age and display. Design possibly influenced by Mexican, Mayan, Inca design/architecture. Signature possibly in pen, faint, but legible. Direct from Artist's Estate sold in 2004. Might benefit from a professional cleaning though displays well as is. No returns. Delivery only to Paypal confirmed mailing address. Signature required for delivery. Here to Sell.
