Description: OGEECHEE TRADING COMPANY Fine Postcards, Stamps and Books 1909 French Dirigible This auction is for a nice photograph of the "La Liberte" French Dirigible Airship. - The Liberte, which in August of 1909 was scheduled to be 65 meters long, 12.5 meters high, have a volume of 4,200 cubic meters, and motors to achieve 120 horsepower at a rate of 45 kph. However, after the Republique disaster, the Liberte was redesigned and in June 1910 it was now 84 meters long, 12.8 meters high, a volume of 7,000 cubic meters. It used two Panhard-Levassor engines providing 120 horsepower to turn twin-screws to give it a top speed of 53 kph. The dirigible once flew for 8 hours straight. It was dismantled in 1914. Although the Liberte flew and did not crash, there appear to be very few photographs in the Internet archives and this view is different than any we have seen. The view shows the airship and the gondola or car below the dirigible. The airship appears to be landing or possibly having just taken off. We cannot guarantee that this print is from the original negative; size is approximately 10 x 8". - Scarce. - FREE shipping to US locations for this card.
