Description: Original 1902 The Metropolitan Seattle 100 Photo Book Souvenir Famous Photo Studios Extremely Rare Original antique book A Souvenir Devoted to Seattle and Its Environs 1902 - 1903 Publisher: National Souvenir Company, 1902 Close to one hundred glorious black and white photos – I show you LOTS more of them further below. And not just any photos . . . these photos are notable for the inclusion of work from Seattle's most famous photography studios (Asahel Curtis, Darius Kinsey, Boyd and Braas, Frank LaRoche, and Charles Plummer). And of note are the beautiful decorations and illustrations around many of the photos. In the Art Nouveau styling of the time by Glenn A. Durston, Illustrator (his photo is on one of the Illustrations in the front and he has signed the others (printed signatures). He seems to have a penchant for curvy arty naked women . . . Famous sites ~ Indians ~ Ships ~ University of Washington ~ After the Great Fire in 1889 ~ Piers ~ Lakes ~ Buildings ~ Street Scenes ~ Water Front ~ Navy Yard ~ and much more. A one page introduction and the rest of the book is filled with the photos. In addition to the photos is a wonderful illustration of Snoqualmie Falls with a bare breasted woman in the falls surrounded by Art Nouveau scrolling designs – quite an image . . . Of other note is a 3 page foldout showing a Bird’s Eye View of Seattle Business District and Elliott Bay from Roof of King County Court House. The photo is embellished with beautiful Art Nouveau decorations and an Indian warrior by the same illustrator Durst. The subject if the photos are identified with text From the Introduction: “The marvelous growth of the city from 3,500 in 1880 to 80,000 in 1900 and over 100,000 in 1902 – may be easily accounted for when one considers her natural advantages.” “In the following pages the publishers have endeavored to portray the greatness and beauty of this favored city, soon to be the Queen of the Western Sea . . . Condition: Very Good condition ~ Complete and tightly bound ~ no writing with exception of “Merry Christmas & Happy New Year” and 1902-1903 on the title page – inside pages nice and clean and unmarked . . . the outside covers show some wear around the edges (the edges hang over the textblock) ~ a crease in the front cover center bottom ~ a few spots in the lower right corner of front cover ~ Little roughness on the spine ends ~ back cover has a few spots as well . . .a beautiful copy of this extremely rare book!
