Monroe became the patient of audiologist, Dr. Eugen Grabscheid, who diagnosed that Marilyn had a mild case of Ménière’s disease, a permanent buildup of fluids in the inner ear, a troubling and very concerning illness, It is difficult-to-treat ailment that can lead to hearing loss and periods of dizziness. Written in blue ink on his printed stationery, Dr. Grabschied writes to Monroe who was then married to Arthur Miller: “Dear Mrs. Miller: Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your great success. With best regards to you and your husband. Sincerely, Eugene Grabschied”. Based in New York City, Dr. Grabschied was the ear, nose, and throat doctor to the stars. He was particularly adept in getting singers of Broadway shows and international opera singers quickly back to being able to perform.
