Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare broadside (single page playbill) from the the Pre-Broadway engagement of the HAROLD ARLEN and TRUMAN CAPOTE musical "HOUSE OF FLOWERS" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open December 30th, 1954 at the Alvin Theatre in New York City and run for 165 performances.) ..... The musical starred PEARL BAILEY and featured DIAHANN CARROLL, JUANITA HALL, JACQUES AUBUCHON (replaced out-of-town by RAY WALSTON), JOSEPHINE PREMICE (replaced out-of-town by DOLORES HARPER), DINO DiLUCA, RAWN SPEARMAN, GEOFFREY HOLDER, ADA MOORE, ENID MOSIER and FREDERICK O'NEAL ..... CREDITS: Book by TRUMAN CAPOTE; Music by HAROLD ARLEN (composer of "You Said It", "Cotton Club Parade", "Life Begins at 8:40", "Hooray for What", "Bloomer Girl", "St. Louis Woman", "House of Flowers", "Jamaica", "Saratoga" and the classic film "The Wizard of Oz"); Lyrics by TRUMAN CAPOTE and HAROLD ARLEN; Sets and Costumes designed by OLIVER MESSEL (Tony Award winner for "Best Scenic Design"); Choreographed by GEORGE BALANCHINE (replaced out-of-town by HERBERT ROSS); Directed by PETER BROOK; Produced by SAINT SUBBER ..... DETAILS: The single page, two-sided playbill measures 5 1/2" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "Madame Tango's Tango" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light creasing and minor edge wear, this rare broadside is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
