Description: Philips Koninck (1619-1688) Dutch, 'The Brigands', Fine Signed 17th Century Antique Baroque Oil Painting A fresh to market fine 17th century oil on re-lined canvas attributed to Philips Koninck, the 17th century Dutch master. The painting depicting a troupe of soldiers on horseback apparently being attacked by a small group of brigands emerging from the edge of a forest. A very interesting painting with some unusual details within it. The military men themselves are accompanied by a horse-drawn cart with seated figures, perhaps prisoners. To the right-hand foreground is a hollow tree trunk within which there is a lone hiding figure, presumably one of the brigands.Further figures are shown at the forest edge, one of whom is firing a pistol at the military group. In the near distance is a robust-looking stone bridge spanning a body of water and in the close foreground is a small pond which appears to have an upturned cart or animal feed trough within it. An intriguing painting, for further research and investigation. The action taking place in an extensive and (probably northern European) hilly and wooded landscape. Note the skillfully rendered blue sky with scattered clouds and the distant hills. Well presented and painted within the typical landscape at which Koninck excelled and displaying his distinctive style. The painting appears to show a partial indistinct signature in dark red, lower left. The image dimensions are approximately: 17 3/4'' x 16'' (45cm x 40cm). Beautifully painted and in excellent condition. Housed in a later wooden frame, ready to hang.
