Description: "Poland" by James Michener. 1983 Random House. Stated First Edition, first printing (printer's number line has a 2 as lowest number, but by Random House convention at the time, stating First Edition also means first printing, as per, for instance, https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/bid/255746/How-to-Identify-Random-House-First-Editions ). ISBN 0394531892. 574 pages with maps throughout. Hardcover with dust jacket. The author has inscribed, dated, and signed this book on the half title page in a black pen or marker. The inscription, as I read it, says: "to Martha + Ross Siragusa, All the best. James A. Michener 15-IX-83". This is interesting for two reasons. First, I'm not sure why, but I believe Michener uses the roman numeral IX for the month in the date he writes. That makes the date September 15, 1983, which, according to Kirkus Reviews website, is the publication date for this book (see https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/james-a-michener/poland-2/ ). A signature dated with the publication date of the book is special. Upon investigation, the couple this book is signed to is also famous. Ross Siragusa, who was married to Martha in 1983, was the founder of Admiral Appliances, also known as the producer of Admiral Televisions. Siragusa sold Admiral to Rockwell in 1974, and it was later resold to Magic Chef. Siragusa later focused on his family foundation, working with many charities in the Chicago area, including Goodwill and public television. Siragusa had many close friends in politics and industry, including presidents and governors. One wonders if Siragusa met Michener through his charitable events or through friends in government. Siragusa died in 1996. Michener himself died in 1997. The book was found in an estate sale in suburban Chicago. For further information on Ross Siragusa's life, see this bio on his family foundation website: https://www.siragusa.org/about-us/our-founder/ Photos are of the actual book on offer.
