Description: I am offering up this last “one-off”, one piece wide with dense curl concentration, eastern maple that is well seasoned (50+ years) from my wood library collection. This old growth silver maple from the east coast region came from a highly figured veneer grade exceptional log and rarer to find as it is 13-1/4” wide requiring a mature tree. This has excellent growth ring spacing and it is visible in the face grain at either wings- the face grain is more structure, tighter and not wild as you can see on the wings that is mostly vertical that it has a slight grain aberration on the half portion with the face grain showing flat sawn make up, but it is tight and subtle and does not take away from the presence of the fine and densely populated, figuring concentration. This also ideal for those looking to net about 8 plus pound completed solid body guitar as this is light-medium density figured maple approximately 2.61 pounds per board foot (physical weight is approximately 4 pounds, 11.2 ounces) with the discretion of finding a lighter-medium density Honduran mahogany in the same density range or a hair lower. The advantage of a one piece top is that there will be no center seam and break from one panel to the next allowing for a seamless application with continuous figuring flow from east to west. The one wide face is all sapwood with the LP single cut pencil outline and the second face is predominantly about 75% sapwood with a band of heartwood approximately 25% running vertically- it is shallower at one end about 1/4” (.250”) at the lower bout and it is about 3/8” (.375”). Keep in mind the thickness of this piece is approximately .950”. Ideally you want to surfaced thickness that heartwood face and get it to a workable thickness 3/4” (.750”) in order to start your carving to yield a standard deep dish, carved top of 5/8” (.625”). You will end up minimizing that heartwood and will leave a narrower and shallower remnant at the backside which will be glued up to a body wood species of your own. This particular one listed is about 13-1/4” wide and should fit a 13” wide LP single-cut or carved top/arched top double cut away design. Ideal for a re-top conversion or restoration- there is a one piece vintage 1959 LP that exist with a one piece top and this would be an ideal ingredient candidate if you are trying to recreate the essence for that vintage "beauty of the burst*" project and require a period correct old grown, seasoned material- this might be just the IDEAL “one piece top” for your deep dish carved top re-top or conversion! You are looking at a rarer, one piece wide, dense flame maple from my own Private Reserve Collection with fine "pith flecking" which is a trademark characteristics of eastern red maple with very good growth rings. Up or bid is for one (1) premium full dense fiddleback flame, flat sawn/slab cut, well seasoned Eastern Maple (acer saccharinum), luthier electric guitar top for one piece carved top/deep dish application. This has excellent chatoyance with excellent figuring depth with excellent tap tone! This is relatively flat (1/32” +/-) and will need to be thickness sanded to your thickness specification by you to start your carve. Dimensions (approximate shown in inches and measured at the lowest point): 20-1/2” long 13-1/4”+ wide .975” thick Old grown/air dried/kiln dried/well seasoned (currently 7 percent moisture content). Flat sawn/slab sawn cut. Sapwood one face, sapwood with heartwood vertical band/sapwood 2 side edge. Cream to yellow color tone is from oxidation and surface patina from aging over time. Rough surfaced two face/2 side edge rough milled cut. This raw blank will require additional drying time per your acceptable build specifications and will also need need proper acclimation to your shop prior to fabrication. Clear shellac/denatured alcohol mixed applied to the surface to help show color, grain and figure (if any). Photographed with exterior natural lighting conditions. Ends sealed with Anchor seal.
