Description: A very rare piece of 19th century newspaper history in the form of an 1854 signed billhead receipt to business owner Samuel Smith for a six month subscription to “The Wall Street Journal & Real Estate Gazette”. The receipt is partially printed and partially handwritten with a beautiful printed “New York” and publication title emblazoned across the receipt. The subscription is handwritten and it is signed “Robinson & Co” likely by Frederick Robinson, the founder of this every publication that only lasted for a few short years during the 1850s and that predated the 1889 edition of The Wall Street Journal, which is still in existence today, by 38 years. A quick internet search does not offer up any ephemera available for sale for this rare publication with examples being housed in the Library of Congress (see eBay images 15 & 16). Provenance comes from a large collection of mid 19th century paper belonging to mining tycoon Samuel Smith of 35 Wall Street, NYC. In Excellent overall condition. Clean and crisp. Very well preserved. Measures 7 3/4” x 3 1/8”. Comes housed in a clear rigid protective archival sleeve for easy display and handling.
