RARE Museum Chinese Dehua Blanc de Chine Figure Zen Master Linji Rinzai 臨済義玄

Description: BaoMing-Collections Oriental Antiques from Collector to Collector Description: A rare and magnificent Chinese Dehua Blanc de Chine porcelain statue of a Zen master in deep serene meditation. Dated to first half of 20thC (1900s - 1949), Chinese Republic period. It has stamped mark "Bo Ji Yu Ren" on the upper back and is attributed to studio and family workshop of Su Xuejin (Chinese: 苏学金, 1869-1919.) The MET Museum has an original statue dated to Chinese Ming dynasty, 17thC. Most auction houses and museum would attribute the figure to that of Bodhidharma (Damo), the founding pillar of Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhism. However, being a Zen practitioner and have seen portrait painting of Zen master Linji Yixuan (Chinese: 臨濟義玄; Japanese: Rinzai Gigen) leads me to believe that this statue is Linji Yixuan and not of Bodhidharma. Included as reference is the original statue at MET museum (upper right of last photo, Accession Number: 63.176; "https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/42547") with side-by-side comparison to a Japanese portrait painting of Rinzai Gigen (upper left). Also included is a display at Tokyo National Museum in 2016, which display portrait painting of Rinzai (lower left) and Damo (lower middle) for your reference. Dimensions: This large figure is 14”H X 9.75”W X 7.25”L (35.56cmH X 24.76cmW X 18.42cmL). Weight 7.25 lbs. Shipping weight with double boxing is approx. 11 - 12 lbs. Condition: Item is in great condition with no usage damage. There's an insignificant shallow production chip to the footrim that is covered with glaze. Item was examined under black UV light and has no restoration. Please study photos carefully for further condition detail. Age / Dating: Chinese, Republic period, first half of 20thC (1900s - 1949).
