One year later, things arent going quite as hed hoped. An organization known as Vanguard, made up of magical creatures and ex-Porters, wants open war with the mundane world. Isaacs own government is incarcerating "potential supernatural enemies" in prisons and internment camps. And Isaac finds himself targeted by all sides. But what will that futures cost Isaac and the ones he loves? Author Biography Jim C. Hines has been a paid juggler, earned a black belt in two different martial arts, performed yo-yo tricks at the top of the Eiffel Tower, and lived with a brain-damaged squirrel. (Only three of those are true.) One of his earliest stories earned first place in the Writers of the Future contest. Hes published more than forty short stories as well as numerous fantasy novels, including the humorous Jig the Dragonslayer trilogy, the Princess series, which re-imagines traditional fairy-tale princesses as butt-kicking action heroines, and the Magic Ex Libris series, about a centuries-old secret society dedicated to the use and control of book magic. In 2012, he won the Hugo for Best Fan Writer. Jim lives in Michigan with his wife, two children, and an unstable number of pets. He can be found online at Review Praise for the Magic ex Libris series: "An engaging writer who is also greatly entertaining, and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys superior worldbuilding." —Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times bestselling writer "I picked up the book meaning to read a few pages. My first thought was, This is a cool concept. The second thing I thought was, This is really, really clever. The third thing I thought was, I should have gone to sleep three hours ago." —Patrick Rothfuss, #1 New York Times bestselling writer "This may be Jim Hines best work. Libriomancer is smart, silly, and deadly serious, all at the same time. Its a book about loving books." —Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling writer "Hines created a system where that magic becomes real, usable, and very definitely not always safe. This is a book for everyone who has ever wanted to pull Excalibur from the page." —Tanya Huff, bestselling author "A rich backstory and mythology that weaves history and magic and science fiction across centuries, between cultures, and around the globe." —Wired "Hines supplies everything a reader needs—werewolves, ghosts, robot insects, a fire spider that eats candy, and homages to classic SF—for a very good time." —Publishers Weekly "Bibliophiles and fantasy enthusiasts will enjoy the authors intelligent approach to both magic and literature." —Library Journal "Hines writes joyously.... Codex Born is what would happen if a group of fantasy fans were to hole up in a room trying to develop a system of magic, saying, But what if THIS happened?" —RT Reviews "Libriomancer is any book-geeks dream come true. It is so much fun and an ode to books." —Book Smugglers "Isaacs story feels extremely personal and intimate, even throughout the world-changing events around him." —SF Signal "Hines has just scratched the surface of what he can do. And I cant wait to see what comes next." —Tor.com "Equal parts quirky humor and serious emotional dissection.... Hines is one hell of an author." —Bookworm Blues "Continues to break tropes and proves that fantasy can be so much more.... Right at the top of my list of favorites along with JK Rowlings Harry Potter, Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller Chronicle, Garth Nixs Abhorsen, and Kim Harrisons Hollows." —Bibliophilic Witch "Wonderful characterizations. From a fire spider to Gutenberg himself, [Hines] makes all his characters come alive on the page." —Errand Dreams Review Quote Praise for the Magic ex Libris series: "I picked up the book meaning to read a few pages. My first thought was, This is a cool concept. The second thing I thought was, This is really, really clever . The third thing I thought was, I should have gone to sleep three hours ago." Excerpt from Book Testimony and Questioning of Witness Number 18: Isaac Vainio The CHAIRMAN: This hearing will come to order. Its my privilege and honor to welcome the members of the Joint Committee on Magical Security, as well as the witnesses who have been called to testify as we help to shape the future of this great nation during this time of worldwide turmoil and conflict. Mister Vainio, thank you for taking time from your work with New Millennium to join us today. Mr. VAINIO: Your invitation made it clear I didnt have a choice. The CHAIRMAN: Do you affirm that the testimony you will give before this committee is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Mr. VAINIO: Arent I supposed to be sworn in on a Bible? The CHAIRMAN: For security reasons, no books will be permitted in the chamber during your testimony. Mr. VAINIO: Dont worry, Im not about to try libriomancy with a Bible, or any other religious text. Gutenberg might have been able to handle that kind of intensity and belief, but--oh, sorry. Yes, I do so affirm. The CHAIRMAN: Thank you. You may be seated. Mr. Vainio, would you please--what is that? Mr. VAINIO: His name is Smudge. Hes a fire-spider.Hes perfectly safe as long as hes in his cage. Dont go poking your fingers in there, though. Hes my service animal. My lawyer advised me this was permitted under disability law. Mr. CHILDRESS: You have a service spider? Mr. VAINIO: He senses danger. Like Spider-Man. Having him around helps me with some . . . anxiety issues. Its been a traumatic few years. I have a letter from my therapist if youd like to see it. The CHAIRMAN: That wont be necessary. For the record, please state your history and current role with the organization known as the Porters. Mr. VAINIO: Ive been a member of the Porters--intermittently--for about seven years, working to protect the world from magical threats. Ive been a cataloguer, field agent, and researcher. Ten months back, I helped to found the New Millennium project in Nevada, where I currently work as Director of Research and Development. The CHAIRMAN: Ten months. That would be shortly after you announced the existence of magic to the world. Mr. VAINIO: Correct. The CHAIRMAN: You constructed New Millennium in the United States. You yourself are an American citizen, born and raised in Michigan. Are you loyal to this country, Isaac? Mr. VAINIO: How do you mean? The CHAIRMAN: There are hundreds of you libriomancers scattered throughout the world, and thousands of other creatures. Vampires and merfolk and werewolves and bigfoots and Heaven knows what else. What assurances does this committee have that you wont turn against the United States of America? How do we prevent people like you from selling your abilities to the highest bidder? Mr. VAINIO: Maybe you could start by not treating us all like potential criminals and terrorists. Chapter 1 "You didnt think this would be easy, did you?" "I knew thered be conflict. Fear. And yah, violence too." "Youre mincing words. The world is headed for war." "Humanity has been at war for more than ninety percent of recorded history." "Not like this. What youve seen over this past year is only the beginning. The warm-up act, if you will." "Says you. Not even magic can see the future." "Not magic. Experience. I watched humanity for centuries. They fear you. Humanity works to control what it fears, and to destroy what it cant control." "Youre a pessimist. Also an asshole." "Neither of those facts changes the truth. Your actions helped bring the world to this precipice." "And yours didnt?" "They did, but lets be pragmatic, shall we? Of the two of us, only one is in a position to affect current events." "One of the advantages of not being dead, eh?" ***** Youd think my time in the field fighting everything from possessed libriomancers to magically animated metal monstrosities to a thousand-year-old dead necromancer would have prepared me for an afternoon testifying before a pack of Washington politicians, but by the time I emerged, I longed for the simplicity of a rabid were-jaguar whose motivation was straightforward, foamy-jawed murder. I ignored the reporters waiting in the hallway and made my way toward a wooden bench where Lena Greenwood sat whispering with Nicola Pallas and Nidhi Shah. "Well?" asked Nicola. "I understand now why a group of vultures is called a committee. I didnt turn any of them into roaches, if thats what youre asking." Though in several cases, it would have been an improvement. "Why drag us out here when theyve already decided were the biggest threat to world peace since the atom bomb?" "To show that they can."
