Description: Die Wandernden Musiker (“The Wandering Musicians”) Signed 1743 German Old Master Oil Painting on Copper Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712-1774) Please take the time to read at leisure the full description of this remarkable painter’s history below: Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich enjoyed an outstanding reputation in his time. Intelligent and skilful, he certainly did not lack qualities of his own, yet he remained first and foremost a pasticheur, extolling and enhancing the works of those Old Masters he followed. He was also able to reproduce the styles of the main schools that shared favor among the public. Dietrich’s work was very popular among art lovers; he was able to put within their means the seductive image of the Old Masters. Dietrich’s talent was thereby amplified by the credit bestowed on him as a populariser. Dietrich, born in Weimar Germany, was the son of a painter, Johann Georg Dietrich, Royal Painter in Weimar Having been trained in the basic artistic principles by his father, he was sent to Dresden at the age of fifteen to study under the landscape painter Alexander Thiele, Painter to the King of Poland, and a renowned artist in his own right. During the three years he spent at the school, Dietrich revealed his talent at bettering the works of his painting master. From 1733 the artist was in the service of August the Strong, King of Saxonia. In 1741 he was appointed Royal Painter to the court of King August III. Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich spent four years in the service of the King, after which Dietrich left for Holland, intending to study the works of that country’s master painters, Elzheimer, Van Ostde, Karel Dujardin and above all, Rembrandt, whose techniques of playing with light he hoped to penetrate. Upon his return to Dresden, following a stay of a further year in Holland, Dietrich quickly became a celebrity worthy of his title: Painter to the King of Poland. Not content with producing a general evocation of the Dutch Style, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich excelled in expressing the characteristic temperament of each Old Master, and also succeeded in combining in a single picture elements borrowed from very different treatments. But this German painter was not satisfied with bringing about an 18th century revival of 16th century Dutch painting. In 1743, at the age of 31, Dietrich left for Italy, partly, it would seem, to escape the workload attached to his status. Today's painting, Die Wandernden Musiker (“The Wandering Musicians”) oil on copper, is mounted and backed with an ancient wooden panel. The verso of this wooden panel features a most interesting antique calligraphy India ink inscription, displaying its provenance location in Genoa, Italy. This fortunate happenstance enables the researcher to ascertain the dating and provenance of this remarkable signed Old Master oil painting to 1743-1744. Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich returned to Dresden in 1744, after a second trip to Holland, and stayed there until his death in 1774. To the styles of Berghem and Everdingen, Dietrich added those of Claude Lorrain, Lucatelli or Salvator Rosa. After the death of Jean Antoine Watteau in 1721, Dietrich endeavoured to continue Watteau’s style as well. The paintings of Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich are distributed in galleries, collections and museums worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, the Harvard Art Museum, Antwerp, Brussels, Cherbourg, Geneva, Graz, London’s National Gallery, London’s Wallace Collection, Montpellier, Moscow, Vienna, Venice and many others. His paintings are scattered through all of Europe, and especially in Germany. In the Dresden gallery, of which he was inspector, there are 53 of them. Please take the time to study today's masterpece: Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich - Die Wandernden Musiker (“The Wandering Musicians”) A group of good-humoured and energetic musicians are visiting an inn, as shown by the signboard hanging outside. It is a delightful Old Master painting, which wryly demonstrated Dietrich's sense of humour and history. Also of great interest is the small gnome-like figure of the piper! Please note the original antique Baroque gilded frame surrounding Die Wandernden Musiker (“The Wandering Musicians”). In itself, the frame is an item of great age, beauty and interest. Presumably developed in Italy, the technique of painting on copper dates to the early 1500s. Between 1575 and 1650, copper paintings flourished in northern and southern Europe, the likely result of an increase in printmaking on copper plates. Among their advantages, copper sheets offered a fine, non-absorbent surface and required little preparation. They also tolerated variances in climate better than other materials. And unlike paintings on panel or canvas, those on copper did not suffer damage caused by linings or transfers. The metal’s natural smoothness concealed brushstrokes and imparted an enamel-like brilliance. As shown in the photos, Die Wandernden Musiker is cleverly signed by the artist in the lower right foreground on the music stand from which the musicians are performing, C W E D, as Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich traditionally signed his paintings. The verso of the copper plate is also artist-signed, as shown: Dietrich. Die Wandernden Musiker ("The Wandering Musicians") presents an excellent opportunity to acquire an important original signed Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich Old Master oil painting, at an extremely realistic price. Please take the time to study Die Wandernden Musiker ("The Wandering Musicians"). It is a true gem of Old Master artistry. The term “Old Master” is commonly accepted usage referring to a European painter or artist who worked before the year 1800. The Old Masters were European artists working before 1800. Their work was characterized by extreme technical skill and a certain sense of distinctive and haunting beauty which has kept the artwork popular through the centuries. Since the time period for works of art classified as Old Masters is broad, a huge assortment of artistic styles and techniques are encompassed under this umbrella term, as are a range of artists including Goya, Dürer, da Vinci, Tintoretto, Raphael, and Vermeer, among many others. The works of the Old Masters are, of course, increasingly difficult to find and have enjoyed a correspondingly steady rise in prices. The paintings of the Old Masters represent a much more secure investment, esthetically as well as financially, than the vagaries of the financial marketplace. One can sleep much more soundly with an Old Master painting on the wall than a possibly-declining stock market portfolio. The Old Master oil paintings of Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich have been eagerly sought after and collected for generations, with an attendant continual rise in prices.
