Description: The Waverly Series of books by Sir Walter Scott are some of the most important and at one point were some of the most widely read and popular novels in Europe. Scott was a Scottish historian, playwright, poet, and historical novelist that lived between 1771 and 1832. While he wrote his novels nearly two centuries ago, his works remain classics of Scottish literature and the English language. This is a partial set of ten (out of twelve) Waverley Novels published by De Wolfe, Fiske & Company, of 365 Washington Street, Boston. This set includes: Waverley (1814) and Woodstock (1826) Fortunes of Nigel (1822) and Count Robert of Paris (1832) Black Dwarf (1816), Old Moriarty (1816) and Quentin Durward (1823) Kenilworth (1821) and St. Ronan’s Well (1823) Peveril of the Peak (1822) and The Betrothed (1825) The Monastery (1820) and The Abbot (1820) Fair Maid of Perth (1828) and The Antiquary (1816) Redgauntlet (1824) and The Pirate (1822) Ivanhoe (1819) and The Talisman (1825) Rob Roy (1817) and The Heart of Midlothian (1818) These books are each a 3rd edition. Each measures approximately 7.5” x 5” x 2.” The spines of Ivanhoe and The Talisman and Rob Roy and The Heart of Midlothian are by far in the worst shape of all ten novels (see accompanying photographs for details). The other eight are in very good shape. The binding on each of the ten novels is in very good shape, especially considering their age. Each is bound in half smooth butterscotch calf over board. Each has marbled/paisleyed patterned cover and a gilt paneled spine, although most of the gilding has been lost with time (see accompanying photographs for details). Each novel is illustrated throughout with steel engravings and I would bet most of the pages have never been touched (in other words, I doubt these books were ever read).
