St Charles Borromeo was a 16th century Cardinal and the nephew of a pope. He served as Vatican Secretary of State, at the important Council of Trent, pushed for a return to morals and manners of religious houses which had become lax and lazy, amid much opposition. He countered the Protestant reformation, preached effectively, and founded many religious and other organizations to help the poor and improve education. It is amazing how Our Lord worked through this man, who was born into a decadent society and family (his mother was a Medici!) and gave us this saint who was the soul of humility.
