MacGregor Jr. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The State University of New York Maritime College is a US service academy located in Fort Schuyler,Throggs Neck, the Bronx, New York. The college is part of the State University of New York or aka SUNY, The college was founded in 1874 and only one of seven degree maritime academies in the US. The academy trains officers to serve in the US Merchant Marine branches of the military and maritime transportation industry. TS Empire State VI (1990-Present) ---The present training ship is TS Empire VI was originally the SS OREGON. She was built by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock, Newport News, Virginia and launched September 1961. She serviced in the Pacific trades until 1977. Then she was purchased by Moore McCormack Lines, renamed MORMACTIDE and serviced South American trade from 1977-1982. After a few changes in ownership the and the last company was bankrupt went in 1986 she was turned over to the Government and laid up in the James River Reserve Fleet. In November of 1988 she was converted to be a training ship by Bay Shipbuilding Corporation in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and re-named EMPIRE STATE VI. She was delivered to the State University of New York Maritime College on December 31, 1989. USS St. Marys (1875-1908) ---The first training ship was the USS St. Mary’s a US navy sloop of war commissioned in 1844. She proudly served in the Mexican-American war 1946-48, the Pacific Squadron 1848-1872. In 1873 transferred to Suny maritime College and was the school ship until 1908. B. MacGregor Jr. Watercolors Nautical Chart Artist William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and the grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters who also were artists. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May, 2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA.
