Description: This cap allows you to complete a DIY coolant delete on your Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU). The installation is very straightforward (scroll down for a youtube link at the bottom) although removing the LDU from the car is more complicated. This listing is for one cap pressed from a single disk of 304 Stainless. Tesla released their own 'Revision-U' version of the LDU in late 2023 so this DIY approach is following the same path for several thousand dollars less! Once the LDU is out of the car, you remove the coolant manifold, discard the leaky seal and cut off the aluminum coolant tube. The cap presses into the 55mm bore in the manifold where the leaky seal normally goes. Use RTV or retaining compound and a standard bench vise and a block of wood to press it in. The coolant flows through the original path on your original manifold with this cap blocking the coolant route to the rotor where the impossibly flawed seal caused all the problem. If your seal has been leaking and coolant is visible on your rotor bearing, we recommend going further to mitigate the coolant before simply completing this coolant delete. Most of the effort and labor has already been done so now is the time to replace bearings and dry out the stator and inverter if they need it. Many threads on the Tesla Motor Club forum discuss the parts and steps needed. This is a great one: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/diy-tesla-drive-unit-repair.274163/ A video that shows the basic install process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RmA1ZSjaP8 Please note - if your LDU is still under warranty, do NOT complete this modification as it will certainly void the warranty. Instead, check your encoder/speed sensor for blue coolant regularly - especially during the last year of the warranty period - and push Tesla for a warranty replacement if yours is leaking. They can leak for many months and thousands of miles before the coolant ruins the whole motor. Many Model S and Model X produced between 2012-2020 have the LDU with the fatal coolant seal flaw. They will ALL leak eventually. Tesla released the Revision U in the fall of 2023, effectively giving up trying to make the seal work. Revision U deletes the coolant from the rotor but maintains the coolant to the inverter, stator and the ‘flyover’ tube cooling the gearbox. This cap replicates the revision in your existing manifold. ALL rear wheel drive cars and all P-Performance dual motor cars have this LDU. Only the non performance dual motor cars have a different motor without the issue. Model 3/Y and the newest S/X are also safe. Please reach out with any questions.
