Brown Recommended Reading-1980 Terry Carr ----------- 5 ----------- INTRODUCTION Terry Carr THERE ARE GREAT CHANGES OCCURRING IN THE science fiction genre, and I'm sorry to say that most of them are bad. The recession has severely curtailed most readers' budgets for entertainment, with the result that book sales have lessened considerably. (As Robert A. Heinlein pointed out years ago, writers are competing for the readers' beer-money.) The situation is made worse by inflation, as production costs have forced publishers to raise the prices of their books. At the end of 1980, paper costs rose by 20 percent, so we'll have to expect further price raises. Fortunately, the recession hasn't hit publishing quite as hard as other fields of entertainment, such as records and movies. A number of record-store chains have been forced out of business, and the movie companies are run- ning scared: 1980's movie releases were lower, in quality than those of any year in recent memory, an appalling proportion of them being sequels to or imitations of proven box-office hits. A similar trend has been evidenced in science fiction, though: bookstore shelves are crowded with sequels, se- ries novels and trilogies. Even the "individual" novels be- ing published now show a much higher proportion of lowest-common-denominator styles and subjects, most of them adventure novels or "hard science". stories.
