The P – 51B was the second variant of the original P – 51 Mustang design, and the first to prove the exceptional qualities of the airframe design. After the original Allison engine versions had proven a disappointment, English engineers experimentally fitted one Mustang with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, (the spitfire and hurricane power plant) Results from the cross breed were astounding – a 45 mph increase in speed and great improvements to range and operating height. Production versions of this combination became the P 51B, which until suspended by the P – 51D, (introducing better vision from the bubble canopy built little increase in performance) Saw continuous action against the enemy ; emerging from the conflict as one of the best fighters produced by either side. The P – 51B still regarded by many as the most appealing of all the Mustangs had a span of 37 feet and could top 440 mph.
