U.S. Early Nuclear Submarines USS Nautilus SSBN Fleet Missile Navy films DVD

Description: Early Nuke Submarines " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> EARLY NUCLEAR SUBS DVD Video Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. The dream of nearly unlimited range and constant submergence was realised with the U.S. Navy's development of nuclear powered submarines. In July 1951, the U.S. Congress authorized construction of the first nuclear-powered submarine, Nautilus, under the leadership of Captain Hyman G. Rickover, USN (sharing a name with Captain Nemo's fictional submarine Nautilus in Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea). By the late 1950s both the the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom (using a U.S.-supplied reactor) had also built nuclear-powered submarines too. Nuclear fleet ballistic missile subs formed a cornerstone of the U.S. Nuclear weapons triad throughout the Cold War and to this day. These early nuclear pioneers paved the way for today's modern nuclear subs. ALSO see our related DVD on "POLARIS SUBMARINES". This DVD contains the following FIVE movies documenting the early nuclear submarine era: - USS SKATE AT THE NORTH POLE USS Skate (SSN-578) was the lead ship of the Skate class of nuclear submarines. She was the third nuclear submarine commissioned, the first to make a completely submerged trans-Atlantic crossing, and the second submarine to reach the North Pole and the first to surface there. (9.5 min) - NAUTILUS ARCTIC PASSAGE This film shows the historic 1958 voyage of the world's first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) under the North Pole. (14 min) - USS TRITON NUCLEAR SUBMARINE 1ST SUBMERGED CIRCUMNAVIGATION 'Beyond Magellan', a film made by General Dynamics, shows the cruise of the submarine USS Triton around the world in 1960. Triton was one of the largest submarines of its era and equipped with twin nuclear reactors. (26 min) - SILENT SENTINEL This U.S. Navy documentary made in the 1960s shows the service's submarine fleet, including conventional boats and the nuclear powered Polaris fleet ballistic missile submarines aka FBM Fleet Ballistic Missile boats. (14 min) - "The Submarine Part II" "Backgrounds, Characteristics and Missions of Nuclear Powered Submarines" This 1971 film shows how the nuclear attack submarine and the fleet ballistic missile submarines, with their sophisticated technologies and nuclear weapons capability.
