Material is cast marble , produced by 'Greek Art Shop' and handmade in Greece. This reproduction of the famous Farnese Hercules is beautifully executed and exquisitely proportioned. Depicted is Hercules ( Herakles in Greek). He is leaning left , resting his arm on his club which is set upon an outcropping of rock with the skin of the Nemean Lion ( the first of the 12 labors given him as impossible tasks by King Eurystheus of Tiryns )and holds the 3 Golden Apples of Hesperides ( his final labor ) behind his back in his right hand. The original statue is 10 1/2' high and is called the 'Farnese Hercules' because it was found by the Farnese Families excavators as they were digging in ancient sites for materials to be used to build a new palace. What they found in the 'baths' during excavation was a magnificent array of statues including this one , signed 'Glykon'. It was likely an early 3rd century Roman copy of a Greek bronze sculpture of much greater age by the Greek sculptor Lysippos. Beautifully done , it is one of the classics of ancient world sculptures.
