In the 1960’s while working for Motorola, Martin Cooper developed the first truly portable Cell Phone. The first call was made in 1973 by Cooper while standing on 6th Ave in NYC. It was made to his Bell Lab Competitor. The original phone weighed 3 lbs and was appx. a foot long. It became nicknamed the “BRICK”. It was not until 1983 that it received FCC and IEEE approval. The first cellular carrier using 800 AMPS was CELLULAR ONE. Retail cost in the D.C. (Washington Area) was 42 cents (today- $1.25) per minute and the phone retail $4000 (today $12,000).
