More information on the colored Stripes used on vehicles and equipment : They were a means for designating organic units within a major unit upon arrival in the UK the practice of stencilling equipment, duffel bags and vehicles with stripes was was widely used in the MTO (starting at least from August- September, 1943 – and redeployed to the UK for the Normandy invasion. Few vehicles belonging to units deploying to North West Europe directly from the UK after June 1944 bear these stripes. used widely to ID individual units. As a form of tactical marking on military vehicles in the ETO and at Normandy in particular, the D-Day invasion, the standard well known fender/bumper unit designations on field gear , equipment, jeeps, trucks, armored cars, half-tracks, TD's and tanks prior unit i . d . Markings were to have been obscured for security reasons, and replaced with an emblem which consisted of horizontally situated colored bars, or *horizontal* colored BAR-CODES, and corresponding serial numbers specific to the unit the vehicle belonged to. There is photographic evidence of these colored security bar-code emblems in publications concerning the Normandy invasion , unfortunately, the photos are not in color, bar code was similar for all equipment in the company or troop, and based on the last two digits of the unit serial number.
